One of the Sundays that the EPIC pulled into Barcelona, Members of the Legends in Concert show, the Cirque Show, and a few from Blue Man, including myself met a privately chartered bus in the parking lot of Terminal A. Stevie, from Excursions Barcelona (pictured above, second from the Left), met us in the parking lot. An outdoorsy-type with a British accent, Stevie was easy to get along with from the start. The group was in good spirits because we were heading to Costa Brava for a Kayaking and Snorkeling Tour.
The day was awesome! I have very little pictures, because, well, we were kayaking in the ocean- so I didn’t want to take my phone out there. There were some GoPro’s in waterproof cases that made it out there, but I haven’t gotten a hold of any of those pics yet… (more…)
It’s amazing to me how different “the same” show can be every night.
Being on tour, we are playing, at least on paper, the same show, every night. But it never feels exactly the same. For myself, it’s not so much the specific events, or notes that get played that are so different. It’s how different it can feel.
Now, I’m very focused right now on getting myself in good shape. Mainly through yoga. Yoga focuses on alignment of the body, and symmetric movement, as well as breath, energy flow, and a clam state of mind. The Blue Man show by nature (at least for drummers) is a very asymmetric show. It’s very right hand and right foot driven. That’s just the way the parts are written, as well as the way a traditional drum set is designed. The way the hands cross over for the Hi Hat/Snare Drum combo, and the fact that the right foot plays the largest drum on the entire kit, while the left foot plays a dainty pair of light weight cymbals. That’s a very different workload. (more…)
It’s been a little over one month since I’ve been on tour with Blue Man, and so far, I’m seeing how I go through waves of gaining focus on my goals, then straying away.
I’ve broken my goals down into 5 basic things, so it’s easier for me to keep track of. Then, recently, I decided to make this image with one symbol representing each of the 5 goals:
Clockwise from top the symbols represent:
This one isn’t going to be just about my iphone, ipromise… (get it? a bit of igeek humor there for ya!)
One thing that has struck me about touring is how I have to get used to constantly being off balance. I hadn’t really thought about this, but everything around me is constantly changing. Essentially I go to work, and do the same show, but we’re constantly on the move to different cities, and you can’t get what that really means until you go through it… (more…)
So I’m now over a month into tour. Before leaving for tour, I had imagined myself with my blog website well under way, with tons of entries about the places I had gone, and amusing anecdotes about being on tour….
But, alas, I am just now getting my blog up (it’s more work than I tought), and so much has happened that it’s tough to pick a place to start. (more…)
So many things to blog about, but where to start?
Well, I’ll start with what I’m working on, and what my day to day is while I’m here on tour, and explain backwards and forwards from there.
…or not… how ’bout I just start here:
I’ve been a drummer for Blue Man Group for over 5 years now, and (more…)
